  • Powered by 110PS 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit, with a 6-speed manual as standard. 6-speed automatic transmission option will be launched later.

  • Gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in higher variants.

  • New-gen Skoda Rapid expected to arrive in India in 2021 with ground-up new design.

Skoda India has launched the Rapid in a BS6 compliant guise with the 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine alongside the all-new Karoq SUV and Superb facelift. It should have been in showrooms by April but was understandably delayed by the global pandemic. The Rapid sedan is now a petrol-only offering.

The launch of the 2020 Skoda Rapid 1.0 TSI is accompanied by the Superb facelift and all-new Karoq. All these three models strengthen the brand’s premium portfolio in India ahead of the arrival of the heavily localized mid-size SUV based on MQB A0 IN platform. It was previewed via Vision IN concept.

Prices for the Rapid 1.0 TSI are between Rs 7.49 lakh and Rs. 11.79 lakh (showroom) and it is available across five variants – Active, Ambition, Style, Onyx and Monte Carlo. The 2020 Skoda Rapid 1.0 TSI comes with multiple colour choices. For instance, the Monte Carlo variant can be had in Flash Red and Candy White colours while the Ambition variant is offered in Brilliant Silver, Candy White, Toffee Brown and Carbon Steel shades. The Rapid 1.0 TSI Onyx variant is sold in Candy White and Lapiz Blue (with black wheels).

The 1.0 TSI (Turbocharged Stratified Injection) petrol engine is updated to meet BSVI emission regulations in the C-segment sedan that has been struggling to garner high sales volumes. The Rapid uses the 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which is good enough to produce 110 PS at 5,000 rpm and 175 Nm of peak torque at 1,750 rpm. In the Rapid, the powertrain is paired with only a six-speed manual while a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission will follow shortly. The new engine has ARAI certified mileage of 18.97 kmpl. No exterior updates accompany the Rapid along with this new engine.

Skoda Auto India commenced bookings of the 2020 Rapid 1.0 TSI and the Karoq SUV domestically for a refundable fee of Rs. 50,000 across authorised dealerships present in the country earlier this year. It can also be reserved online at Skoda’s official website as well for the convenience of the customers.

It comes loaded with new features such as four airbags, ABS with EBD, reversing camera, automatic headlights and wipers, LED Daytime Running Lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, cruise control, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, MirrorLink.

The 2020 BS6 Skoda Rapid 1.0 rivals the likes of the facelifted 2020 Hyundai Verna, the upcoming fifth-gen Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, Volkswagen Vento and Toyota Yaris.

Skoda’s compact sedan is now powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol TSI engine that has an output of 109 BHP of peak power at 5000 rpm and 175 Nm of peak torque at 1750rpm. It is presently offered with a 6-speed manual transmission while an automatic option will be added later as well which will be a six-speed unit.

The petrol motor has a claimed fuel efficiency of 18.97 KM/L. The new engine replaces the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines.

The BS6 Rapid continues to feature climate control with rear AC vents, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, telescopic steering wheel adjustment, automatic AC, rear defogger, electronic windows, adjustable driver’s seat auto headlamps and leatherette upholstery.

The lower variants get the same 6.5-inch touchscreen display as before while the better-equipped variants get a new 8.0-inch unit which has a gloss black surround finish. The Style and Monte Carlo variants also come equipped with infrared-cut glass for the windows and screens.

Safety: In terms of safety, the Rapid offers up to four airbags, rear parking camera, and ABS with EBD while hill hold control and electronic stability control is limited to the automatic variants. Like the previous Rapid, the BS6 model also gets cosmetic packages for the exterior as well as the interior with the Monte Carlo and Onyx editions.

Appearance-wise, there’s not much differentiating the new BS6 Rapid compared to the older model. Although it gets new garnishes like blacked out trunk lip spoiler, contrast coloured side foil, and a few packages like Rough road package and Rider packages as well.

One of the reasons this update only features an engine change is because the next-gen Rapid sedan is expected to arrive in India by 2021. Its looks should be in line with the theme of the latest generations of the Superb and Octavia along with some updated tech.
